The Holy Mysteries of the Orthodox Church

The Holy Mysteries hold a central place in the life of every Orthodox Christian. Through them, we receive God’s grace, grow in faith, and participate more fully in the life of the Church.

Baptism and Chrismation

The Holy Mystery of Baptism is the spiritual birth of a person into a new life in Christ. Through threefold immersion in blessed water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, a person is united with Christ, cleansed from ancestral sin, and received into the Church, the Body of Christ.

Following Baptism, the newly baptized receives the Holy Mystery of Chrismation, through which the grace of the Holy Spirit is bestowed. The newly baptized is anointed with Holy Chrism with the words: “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

Baptism and Chrismation mark the beginning of a new life in Christ and are received only once in a person’s lifetime.

The Holy Mystery of Repentance (Confession)

In the Holy Mystery of Confession, the believer sincerely acknowledges and confesses his or her sins before God in the presence of a priest. Through genuine repentance and the prayer of absolution, God grants forgiveness and restores communion with Him and His Church.

Confession is not simply a listing of sins, but a sincere change of heart and a commitment to turn away from sin and draw closer to God.

The Holy Mystery of Holy Communion (The Eucharist)

The Holy Eucharist is the very center of the life of the Orthodox Church. During the Divine Liturgy, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, the bread and wine become the true Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Through Holy Communion, the faithful are united with Christ and with one another as members of His Body, the Church. Preparation for Holy Communion includes prayer, fasting, repentance, and Confession, according to the guidance and blessing of one’s spiritual father.

The Holy Mystery of Holy Unction

Holy Unction is the Holy Mystery in which the faithful are anointed with blessed oil while prayers and passages from the Holy Gospel are offered for the healing of soul and body.

It is especially offered to those who are ill, but may also be celebrated for the faithful as a source of spiritual and physical strengthening. Through this Holy Mystery, we seek God’s healing grace, forgiveness of sins, comfort, and strength.

The Holy Mystery of Holy Matrimony

The Holy Mystery of Marriage is God’s blessing upon the union of a man and a woman, founded upon love, faithfulness, and mutual self-sacrifice.

Through this Holy Mystery, husband and wife receive God’s grace to build a Christian family, raise their children in the Orthodox faith, and become a living witness of Christ’s love for His Church.

The Holy Mystery of Holy Orders

The Holy Mystery of Holy Orders was established by our Lord Jesus Christ for the ministry and service of His Church. Through the laying on of hands (Hirotonia) by a bishop, a candidate receives the grace of the Holy Spirit to serve as a deacon, priest, or bishop.

Those ordained are called to proclaim the Gospel, celebrate the Holy Mysteries, teach the faithful, and care for the spiritual life of the Church. Holy Orders is not a position of honor, but a sacred calling to humble service to God and His people.

The Significance of the Holy Mysteries

The Holy Mysteries are not merely symbolic ceremonies. They are sacred acts through which God’s grace is truly bestowed upon the faithful. Through them, we are united more deeply with Christ, strengthened in our faith, and participate in the life of His Church.
